Call Center Jobs

Working as an operator in a call center can be one of the most rewarding jobs.  Depending on the place of employment, you often have the leisure of flexible working hours, incentives, and/or commission.  Since this job offers many great rewards and flexibility, a call center often employs younger workers, who can work around school schedules.  Benefits and college tuition are often offered with related careers.

Six Tips on Choosing a Call Center Job

  1. Determine what type of call center you would like to work for.  Do you want to work from home?  Or would you rather be in a formal, work environment?
  2. If you want to work from home, be sure to get/setup the proper equipment such as phone lines, computers, internet access, company software etc.
  3. Research the training process and fees, if there are any.  Some companies require you pay them for the first two weeks of training then reimburse you upon training completion.  This ensures your dedication to the job. Other companies do not pay you at all for the training required.  Be sure that you are being paid for all work completed.
  4. Get the dirt!  Are they hiring you as an independent contractor, or an actual employee?  Independent contractors are expected to pay their own taxes, which could leave you in a mess come tax season if you are not careful.
  5. Find out how you are going to be paid.  Are you compensated strictly by commission, base pay and commission, hourly, or based upon amount of time spent on phones?  By reviewing the benefits and pay situation, you can decide if the job is right for you.
  6. Investigate the call center company.  Make sure the company is not only legal, but that the practices and procedures bring in money.  You have the right to know whom you will be working for.

With the hours and pay that works for you, working as a call center operator can be very rewarding.  Take the six steps listed above into consideration before choosing a center to work for.  This will ensure you call center experience to be a successful one.
