Do Not Call

The national Do Not Call is a compiled list of phone numbers of people who wish to not receive telemarketed phone calls; however, it will not stop calls from certain non-profit organizations.  Once a number is added to the list, it will remain on the list for 5 years.  Anyone who receives a call from a telemarketer, having been previously added to the list, can file a complaint and sue.  It is against the law for telemarketers to contact someone whose phone number is on the DNC compilation list.

All phone numbers, including wireless, can register at www.donotcall.gov. 

It is required that all call centers scrub their phone calling lists against the National Do Not Call.  Some other rules pertaining to the DNC compliance issues are as follows:

• Every 31 days call centers must scrub against the national DNC list and remove any phone numbers that appear to be out of compliance.
• Call centers/telemarketers are not supposed to block their number at any time when calling consumers.  All centers must be identifiable.
• Calls before 8 AM and after 9 PM are prohibited.
• The name of the agent and the entity or company for which the telemarketer is calling, must be provided on the call.  The location and phone number of the entity must be provided if requested.
• Abandoned calls must not rise above 3% for any one call center.
